We use organic growing methods with our plants - no synthetic fertilizers nor pesticides. We control weeds by using prairie
hay, wheat straw, or wood chip mulch and control insects by hand or with biological controls such as ladybugs, lacewings,
Bt and poultry. Our poultry consists of free-ranging flocks of chickens, Guinea fowl, turkeys, and peafowl. We reduce deer
and rabbit damage with large dogs, human hair and other environmentally friendly methods.

We
are a nursery specializing in Native Prairie Wildflowers as well as Trees and Shrubs that attract and feed Birds, Bees and
Butterflies.
Our site is continually updated so that it is "ripe" with information and plant material that will
attract these critters to your landscape. Please check back with us regularly.

Our soil is unique as well. Most potted plants
are grown in a "soil-less mix", meaning that there is no actual soil in the pot, just pine bark, peat and pearlite - which
requires frequent synthetic fertilizers. Our plants are grown in nutrient rich composted chicken, garden and barnyard wastes
which requires a minimum of fertilization. When needed, fertility is provided from organic, non-synthetic sources. Our trees
and shrubs are inoculated with naturally occurring mycorrhyzae which aid the plants in procuring nutrients and water.

Butterfly Bushes are magnets for Monarch Butterflies and many
others! These Butterfly Bushes are NOT native to North America, but hail from China. Most native
butterflies will nectar at non-native flowers, but native plants are preferred. (see Why Plant Natives? page)

We grow our trees and shrubs in RootMaker growing bags instead of plastic pots. Why? Well, how many times have you purchased
a potted plant only to find that when you removed the plant from the pot at planting time, the roots have grown around the
pot in useless circles. These circling or “girdling” roots must be cut to allow their outward growth. Otherwise,
as the plant grows, these circling roots will eventually constrict the upward movement of water, and the plant will die. Often,
if the plant is a tree, the tree will blow over before it dies, due to a lack of lateral growth of the root mass. RootMaker
growing bags constrict the root tips, preventing those circling roots. This produces increased lateral root growth, minimizing
transplant shock because the root mass is minimally affected by removal of the bag. You end up planting ALL of the root-mass!
